Daily choices, decades of progress.

From prioritizing plastic reduction, to making sure that our people and partners are valued, respected, and supported, sustainability is daily business. For the last 37 years, Viva Tierra has weighed the impacts of our decisions on the environment, our society, and our economy. We take strategic, targeted action to reduce negative outcomes, and strengthen areas of positive progress. We do it by staying rooted and humble, and focusing on lasting, incremental growth in the following four areas.

WholeHarvest-Wide.png

Whole Harvest Marketing

We reduce food waste, generate additional grower revenue, and help feed our communities.

Making sure our organic produce doesn’t go to waste is a central focus for Viva Tierra. In addition to bringing our growers’ top quality fruits and vegetables directly to the fresh retail market, we also work hard to sell imperfect, undersized, or misshapen produce to food service and processing channels for use as ingredients, as well as other value-added uses, such as juice and purées. Items that we can’t find a market for are donated to food banks, rather than simply thrown out.

Logistics-Wide.png

Smart Logistics

We work to keep costs down, lower carbon emissions, and get our organics to market quicker.

Sometimes, sustainability is about what you don’t do. Viva Tierra continually strives to streamline our logistics to make sure our produce doesn't travel any further than it needs to in order to reach our customers, and that it travels by the most efficient mode of transit possible, including rail and sea. We carefully plan our imports to arrive at the port closest to the market they are destined for to avoid having to reshuffle inventory via cross-country trucking.

Science-Wide.png

Technological Advancements

We research, test and implement sound science to increase yield and farmer profitability, conserve water, and improve freshness and taste.

Since 1984, Viva Tierra has worked with agricultural scientists and organic growers and packers to improve practices and facilitate the sharing of knowledge across regions and hemispheres. Not only have growing practices, pest control techniques, and harvest timing improved, but so has our utilization of advanced cold storage, temperature, and ethylene monitoring to preserve fruit in peak condition until it reaches the market.  All of this adds up to more productive farms and better quality fruit, which is good for our farmers and delicious for consumers.

Relationships-Wide.png

Lasting Relationships

Our partnerships are built on trust and mutual respect, and allow us to maintain the highest standards for quality and supply.

Viva Tierra has thrived by developing and maintaining long-term relationships with our organic growers, packers and retail customers. Our decades-long partnerships have allowed growers to invest in new harvest equipment, establish new orchards, and build new packing and cold storage facilities. Successful, independent organic farms support workers and their families with quality jobs, comprehensive training, and other important benefits, such as scholarships and preschools. This is organic at work, and we couldn’t be more proud.

As a member of the Sustainable Food Trade Association, Viva Tierra Organic reports annually on benchmark sustainability metrics. We continually work to increase the sustainability of our operations, including developing recyclable packaging materials, generating solar power at our headquarters, keeping a nearly paperless office, reducing food waste, and more.
