« Greene and Hemly »
Josiah Greene founded his family's farm in the Sacramento River Valley in 1850. Today Doug Hemly, his wife Cathy, their son Matthew and daughter Virginia are the fifth and sixth generation of his decendents farming this fertile Sacramento River delta land. Doug and Cathy's grandchildren - the seventh generation of this deeply rooted farm family - enjoy playing and helping out at the family orchard as well.
Greene and Hemly has been growing and packing their apples and pears organically since 1987. They went organic because "it was just the right thing to do". At the time, there was little research on alternative growing methods and organic standards had not yet been defined, but with generations of farming knowledge on their side, the family was able to sucessfully convert their 160 acres of orchards to organic methods. Today they produce Bartlett and Bosc pears, Granny Smith, Gala, Fuji and Golden Delicious apples, as well as Cherries. Delta breezes keep their riverside orchards cooler than locations further inland, giving their fruit great color and flavor.
Doug says "There is nothing more satisfying than to walk through an orchard that you have planted with your family." CF Fresh is proud to support Doug, Cathy, Matt and Virginia and their family's long tradition of sustainable agriculture.
